Installation Mechanics:
A prospective elevator installer must have a high school diploma or its equivalent and be at least 18 years old. Mechanical aptitude and an interest in machinery are very important as well as the ability to read blueprints. Installers should have a working knowledge of electricity and basic electronics. Elevator workers use hand and power tools and meters and gauges for testing. Elevator installers build elevators, dumbwaiters, wheelchair lifts, and stair chairs, however they may also convert old, outdated, and inoperable elevators with new wiring, controllers, and switches for complete modernization. Crews also install other machinery, plungers, cables, hydraulic systems, and the electrical wiring in the car and from floor to floor in the elevator hoist way. Must be comfortable working from heights and be in good physical health. Elevator installation workers must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment. Most of the work is done indoors, so little work time is lost because of the weather. Elevator constructors and repair workers work in cramped quarters, sometimes in awkward positions. Service Mechanics (Technician):
A prospective elevator tecnician must have a high school diploma or its equivalent and be at least 18 years old. Service mechanics must have an understanding of basic electronics because they troubleshoot problems. Mechanical aptitude and an interest in machinery are very important as well as the ability to read blueprints. Service technicians use hand and power tools and meters and gauges for testing. Duties also include oil and grease the moving parts of an elevator; adjust or replace control systems, signal systems, and hoisting mechanisms. Elevator repair workers must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment. A typical week consists of inspecting, repair and adjust circuitry and machinery including generators, relays, hoisting motors, remote controls, and related equipment using circuit diagrams, schematics and blueprints.
Adjust or replace bearings, brakes, drum sheaves, cables, guide rails, counterweights, cable sheaves, and buffers while following a predetermined schedule of preventive maintenance to ensure proper functioning of all related machinery and equipment.
Provide technical guidance and assistance to less skilled employees.
Most of the work is done indoors, so little work time is lost because of the weather. Elevator constructors and repair workers work in cramped quarters, usually in awkward positions. Repair workers may be on call 24 hours a day. Long work days should be expected. back to top ^
Installation Mechanic's Helper:
Assists Elevator Installation Mechanic to install freight and passenger elevators: Raises and moves heavy machinery and equipment, using hoists, dollies, rollers, wire rope, and cable slings. Holds material in position to assist in installing rails and supporting framework. Drills holes in concrete or steel, using portable electric drill. Assembles and bolts rails, elevator motor, car, and control panels preparatory to installation. Performs other duties as assigned. Mechanical aptitude and an interest in machinery are very important as well as the ability to read blueprints. They learn from experienced elevator workers. Candidates should have a basic knowledge of electricity, wiring, plumbing, or other basic construction knowledge. Elevator installation helpers must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment. Most of the work is done indoors, so little work time is lost because of the weather. Elevator helpers work in cramped quarters, usually in awkward positions. Should be comfortable working from heights. Travel in the states of FL, AL and GA is expected. back to top ^
